Durham Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens inside the eye.

This causes images to become distorted or blurred, bright colors to become dull and nighttime driving to become more difficult.

Cataracts are the leading cause of visual loss in adults over 55. While cataracts can be caused by other factors, the majorities of cataracts are simply caused by natural aging and cannot be prevented.

Durham cataract surgery is performed and the natural lens is replaced with an IOL, intraocular lens implant.  In the past, IOL’s were single-focus only or Monofocal lenses.  This meant that the replacement lens could only focus at one distance, causing the need for glasses after cataract surgery. While we still use monofocal lenses in some cases, there are other options for patients who want to enjoy life without spectacles!

These lenses are considered elective and are not covered by insurance.

You must be deemed a candidate by your surgeon.  Once you have been told that you need Durham cataract surgery, your surgeon will let you know which lens type is recommended for you.  You will meet with a surgery counselor and be given pricing, payment, insurance and scheduling information.

Presbyopia is also caused by the natural aging of the eye.  Over time, you gradually lose the flexibility in the eye’s natural lens and surrounding muscles, causing the inability to focus on things at close range.

When to Visit a Durham Ophthalmologist

The length of time for a cataract to develop can vary from a few months to several years. Vision loss from cataracts is gradual, which is why many patients have difficulty noticing the early symptoms.

Durham cataract surgery is recommended when your quality of life has been diminished because of poor vision.

If you notice decreased vision or you suffer from any of the following symptoms, we recommend a quick and easy screening with one of our Doctors:

  • Glare
  • Halos or Starbursts when driving at night (especially on rainy nights)
  • An inability to see small print on the TV screen or when reading
  • Blurry road signs
  • Double vision
