James A. Bryan III, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology. He has over 30 years of experience treating patients, from routine eye exams to complicated diagnoses.

Dr. Bryan graduated from the University Of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1983. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

Dr. Bryan completed a Research Fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, then completed a residency in Ophthalmology in Charlottesville. Dr. Bryan worked in private practice at Carolina Ophthalmology before joining North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat in January 2024.

Dr. Bryan is one of the most experienced surgeons in the triangle area, having performed vision correction surgery since 1993. He was the first surgeon in the area to be certified to implant multifocal intraocular lenses. He has been performing cataract surgery for over 30 years and has seen remarkable advances, including laser-assisted cataract surgery. His training includes Radial Keratotomy (RK), Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK), Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), and LASIK. He has become a leader among his peers.

Dr. Bryan is a former Division of Ophthalmology Chief at Durham Regional Hospital, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and an active member of the North Carolina Medical Society, International Society of Refractive Surgeons, North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians, and American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons.

Dr. Bryan grew up in Chapel Hill. He enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with family in his spare time.
