What is Auditory Processing Disorder?
Auditory processing is most simply defined as what the brain does with what the ears hear. This includes several aspects of listening.
Common symptoms of APD include:
Difficulty following auditory directions
Poor listening in noisy situations
Delays in responding to others
Misunderstands what is said
Frequently says "huh" or "what"
Difficulty following conversations in groups
Organizational problems
Social skill deficits
Common academic problems with APD:
Reading problems
Difficulty with divided attention tasks, such as note-taking
Difficulty making inferences
Difficulty copying from the board
Poor spelling
Poor attention to verbal stimuli
What can I expect in the assessment?
Review of medical records
Review of previous speech/language and psychoeducational evaluations
A complete speech and language evaluation
Assessment of written language, when indicated
A standard hearing evaluation
Auditory processing testing to help determine how the individual interprets, stores and accesses auditory information
After the evaluation, you will meet with a team member to be given preliminary results and a full report will follow. Recommendations will be made regarding classroom accommodations and speech therapy recommendations.
